The Top 5 World Independence Days

The Fourth of July is right around the corner and Americans across the country are dusting off their barbecues and purchasing their fireworks. In the U.S., Independence Day means national pride, grilling out, colorful displays of explosives, and summertime. America is not the only country to celebrate their independence, however! Take a minute to check out how some other countries around the globe choose to celebrate their day of independence.

1. Cambodia

After their liberation from ruling France in 1953, Cambodia built a monument to their freedom in Phnom Penh, where thousands gather every year on November 9th to watch parades and fireworks in celebration of their independence.

 2. India

India’s freedom from British rule inspired a deep national pride, witnessed in the bright saffron, white and green kites flown in honor of their independence, celebrated on August 5th.

3. Norway
 

Celebrating the signing of the Norwegian Constitution, children across the country gather to march in parades on May 17th, holding flags for their country. A remarkably youthful event, many schools around Norway will host games, activities and lotteries for families to celebrate Norway’s independence.

4. Costa Rica

Though there was no fight for freedom in Costa Rica, residence continue to celebrate their freedom on September 15th, supported by Spain, who had felt that Central America had become a burden of depleted resources. During the festivities, Costa Ricans gather to watch and perform traditional dances, honoring the heritage they were able to keep.

5. France

In contrast to most Independence Day celebrations, which typically honor the end of a conflict for freedom, France’s July 14th Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille Prison, marking the beginning of the French Revolution, with dance parties, military parades and fireworks.
