The Pacific region of Guanacaste, popular for its beaches, has a relatively dry climate, but the rest of the country, from the wetlands of the Caribbean Coast to the Cloud Forests of Monteverde, tends to be very humid, with an overall tropical climate. Here's our recommended checklist for Costa Rica:

• Sunscreen and insect repellent
• Shirts: cotton or light synthetic, both long and short-sleeved
• Dry fit clothing: cotton or light synthetic pants and shorts; bring at least 2 sets of clothes that dry quickly
• Jeans are not recommended as they become easily soaked and do not dry quickly
• Footwear: waterproof, light-weight hiking books, Teva-type sandals, sneakers (if you do not bring hiking boots, be sure to bring two pairs of sneakers)
• If your trip includes observing turtle nesting, bring dark pants and a dark shirt, and closed-toed shoes
• Socks: bring extra pairs in case your feet get wet!
• Rain gear: rain poncho and/or an umbrella
• Hat(s) with visor for both rain and sun protection
• Flashlight with spare batteries and bulb (a MUST for Corcovado National Park)
• Zip-lock plastic bags for personal belongings
• Small day pack or fanny pack for hikes
• Sweater or light jacket
• Polarized sunglasses
• Swimwear
• Extra prescription glasses, contact lenses and medications
• Passport copies
• Camera/Smartphone and extra batteries, charger and plenty of memory to record plenty of memories!
